Now you have the opportunity to experience this transformation for yourself. However, developing your potential for success will require a series of challenges in the classroom and beyond. It all begins this year with your transition from high school to college-level studies.

The first thing we will challenge is your ability to adapt to new environments. Some noteworthy psychologists even believe that the ability to adapt to changing situations is the ultimate test of your intelligence. And institutions of higher learning present a particularly unique challenge because they have evolved their own culture over many centuries. Achieving success in your new environment will require you to understand this culture as thoroughly as possible.

This "college culture" is made more complex by its multidimensional nature, combining the learning that takes place within a classroom with the learning that occurs beyond the classroom. So we know that this year will be like no other in your lifetime. It is both that important and that special.

Fortunately, many people at Wilkes are here because they are dedicated to helping you experience a successful transition. Your advisor, resident assistant, professors, student deans, and many others are prepared to assist you to make the most of your first year. You may even be surprised by how many of your older peers will support your efforts, whether in the classroom, on the athletic fields or through your involvement in student activities.

So begin here to make the most of your first year. Read the transition section of this website, review the frequently asked questions (FAQs), and become familiar with the resources to which you have access. Then take the initial steps toward establishing your educational and career plan.

It all comes together—in you.
