Mentoring Relationships
A great college education is most dependent on human relationships. Wilkes University embraces a culture that is committed to developing meaningful mentoring relationships-partners in your personal and professional development. One of the most important relationships that you will develop in your first year is your relationship with your advisor. Beyond getting to know your advisor and establishing that very important relationship you will also develop connections and networks with many others in our community that will enrich your college experience: peers, faculty, staff and administration.
Professor Mike Steele with Student
As a first-year student, you should work hard to get to know just one faculty member reasonably well this semester, and of course, have that faculty member get to know you. This is a job you will have for each and every semester while you are here at Wilkes. This won’t be easy because building good relationships takes time and requires mutual trust and respect.
When you are successful in achieving this goal, you will have created what will be eight (8) lasting relationships with people who can be resources for you throughout your Wilkes years and beyond. They will be people who will write recommendations for you, advise you about career and life decisions, and people who will give you a lasting connection to Wilkes. Even if you are only successful in doing this twice during your career at Wilkes, I would argue that you will still be far, far better off and will enjoy a richer experience for having done so.
Wilkes Freshman Mentoring Network
Another opportunity for new students to connect to the Wilkes community and build relationships with peers is the Wilkes Freshman Mentoring Network. This is an on-line community and e-mentoring network exclusive to first-year students that connects new students to upper-class e-Mentors. This site provides a great deal of information, discussion and advice to students. If you have not already done so, log on today and find your e-Mentor.
