Nearly all students struggle with these new demands. Academic support is no longer just for students who are “behind”, as it is sometimes viewed in high school. We expect that all Wilkes students will set high academic goals and we support you to reach them. The University College Learning Center provides academic support at no additional cost for part-time and full-time Wilkes students enrolled in any academic program. We have a talented student and professional staff dedicated to supporting your academic goals. Come see us today and discover how you can reach or even exceed your goals.
What is SI?
Supplemental Instruction is a series of weekly review session for students taking historically difficult courses. SI is provided for all students who want to improve their understanding of course material and improve their grades. A professional or a capable undergraduate who has already successfully completed the course facilitates the sessions. It is a collaborative learning experience in which students compare notes, discuss readings, share study strategies, and practice test items. SI peer leaders often attend classes, take notes, read assigned material, and conduct one or more study sessions a week. The SI leader works closely with course instructors to coordinate the sessions.
Supplemental Instruction has a long history of success at Wilkes and nationally, even being named an Exemplary Educational Program by the U.S. Department of Education. This designation was the result of their findings that students who participate in SI for high-risk courses earn higher mean course grades, withdraw at a lower rate, and persist at the institution at higher rates than those who do not participate.
